Bill – hip replacement

Ceramic hip replacement case studyBill Lowe was referred to Mr Shah by his GP after he began to experience severe pain caused by arthritis in his right hip. The constant pain meant that Bill could only walk for short distances and couldn’t take part in his favourite pastimes such as tennis, cycling and skiing.

To relieve Bill of his chronic pain, Mr Shah carried out a total hip replacement, removing his arthritic hip joint and replacing it with a ceramic-on-ceramic hip replacement. The combination of a ceramic bearing surface and larger ‘big ball’ femoral head provided Bill with a hip joint that would be less prone to dislocation and last longer than a metal-on-plastic alternative.

To minimise Bill’s scar and ensure a speedy recovery Mr Shah used a less invasive technique. This involves minimising the incision in order to reduce any potential muscle damage and preserve the hip structures.

Six weeks after his operation Bill was already walking without the help of a stick. Now he has full use of his hip and is busy enjoying an active lifestyle.

“I’ve always been a fairly active person – I love playing tennis, sailing, going skiing and cycling – so it was frustrating when I couldn’t do those things. Now, I don’t even think about it. I don’t have a single regret about having the surgery and I can definitely say it was one of the best decisions I have made. I’m now ready for what life brings with my new hip. I’m planning on going skiing this winter, which was unthinkable at the beginning of last year. My lifestyle is vastly different – the constant pain is no longer there and I’m doing very well.”Bill Lowe
