Paul – hip replacement

Hip replacementPaul’s GP referred him to Mr Shah for a consultation in 2014. He was suffering from pain in his left hip and groin, which would get worse after activities or exercise.

Mr Shah assessed Paul’s condition and arranged X-rays and an MRI scan of his pelvis to provide a conclusive diagnosis. Paul’s symptoms were the result of a hip impingement, where there is unusual contact between the bones of the hip joint, preventing a smooth range of motion.

Paul’s symptoms could be managed in the short-term with regular cortisone injections, and Paul remained under Mr Shah’s care for the next 5–6 years. Over time, Paul’s condition deteriorated, and he developed advanced secondary osteoarthritis in his left hip.

When conservative treatments were no longer an option, Mr Shah recommended a total hip replacement for a long-lasting improvement. Paul joined Mr Shah’s NHS waiting list and underwent his surgery the following year at Goring Hall Hospital.

Paul has enjoyed an excellent outcome, and he can once again enjoy an active lifestyle free from discomfort.

“In my teens and 20’s I was a very sporty person enjoying a wide range of activities including football golf, tennis and cycling. A problem with my hip was first identified about 8 years ago and I was put under the care of Mr Shah who delayed the surgery for as long as he could. Unfortunately, I had got to the point where I was in pain every day and walking short distances would cause me discomfort. The activities I used to enjoy when I was younger were a distant memory.

At 46 years old, I was very young to be undergoing a full hip replacement and I had concerns about how much it would improve my situation. I did not think I would be able to resume the activities I had when I was younger. I also had doubts that the pain I was feeling not just in my left hip – but also the knees of both legs would improve. Mr Shah assured me that I would see a big difference.

How right he was! It is now 10 months since my operation and the difference is amazing. I no longer have any pain in my hip or indeed either knee. I can walk and cycle and play golf like I did when I was younger (unfortunately my golfing handicap is still as bad!). It has totally changed my life.

If you are reading this and have doubts about the effectiveness of the procedure, please trust in what Mr Shah tells you. It is definitely one of the best things I have ever done.”
