Orthopaedic surgery aftercare advice

Before your surgery

Aftercare is an important part of your treatment, and it can have a big impact on your recovery. Follow your aftercare advice carefully and you’ll soon be back enjoying all the things you loved before your illness or injury.

The aftercare advice we provide will be personalised to you, ensuring you know exactly what you need to do to get the best possible results from your surgery. We’re always happy to discuss aftercare from your very first consultation, and we will go through all the information in detail during your pre-operative assessment – a few days before your surgery.

After your surgery

The length of your hospital stay will vary according to your procedure. Thanks to less invasive techniques, such as arthroscopy, many of our patients can go home on the same day as their surgery. And rest assured if you do need to stay in hospital for a few days you will have a private room with all of the facilities of a top hotel.

Before you’re discharged following your surgery, we’ll go through your aftercare advice again, answer questions and make sure you have everything you need. if you need crutches to help you get around during the first few days, these will be provided. We’ll also give you an emergency contact number, so if you do have any concerns, just give us a call.

Physiotherapy is essential following most procedures, helping you to build strength and use your new hip or knee in the right way. It will take a few weeks, or even months, until you’re able to perform certain activities, but with the help of physiotherapy – and some perseverance – you will get there.

We work closely with physiotherapists in the local area, and we can put you in touch with an experienced, registered practitioner following your surgery. If you are having a knee or hip replacement, arthroscopy or synovectomy, you will be given two sessions of physiotherapy as part of your treatment.
